"For Jan" is the third part of The Sweet Time Suite, a composition by Kenny Wheeler with lyrics by Norma Winstone. It runs about ten minutes and is credited on the album as "Part III - For Jan", following "For H." as Part II. The suite marked Wheeler's return to extended composition for big band after Windmill Tilter (1969).
The original recording, made in 1990 by Wheeler's large ensemble with Norma Winstone on vocals, was released on the ECM double album Music for Large & Small Ensembles, produced by Manfred Eicher. The album was recorded in January and February 1990 in London and Oslo. Reviews praised the album, and The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings included it in its core collection. Later recordings by other artists include versions for trio and for voice, by Laura Caviani, George Colligan, Michael Pagán, Rachel Caswell and Mette Juul. The song is classed as jazz and contemporary jazz.
