That Old Feeling has music by Sammy Fain and lyrics by Lew Brown, and was published in 1937 by Leo Feist, Inc. It first appeared in the film Walter Wanger's Vogues of 1938 (released 1937), where Virginia Verrill sang it. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 1937, losing to "Sweet Leilani". Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm Orchestra had an immediate hit with it, and Jan Garber's version reached No. 10 in 1937. Lennie Hayton and His Orchestra, with a vocal chorus by Paul Barry, made what is listed as the earliest original recording, in July 1937. It topped the US charts in 1937 and became a jazz standard from the 1950s on.
In 1952 it featured in the film With a Song in My Heart, where Jane Froman sang it dubbing Susan Hayward. Patti Page, Frankie Laine and Buck Clayton had hit versions in 1955, and Frank Sinatra had a 1960 hit with it from the album Nice 'n' Easy. It was played by a big band in the 1981 film Body Heat and features prominently in Herman Raucher's 1971 novel Summer of '42. The 1997 film That Old Feeling took its title from the song.
