Godchild is an instrumental jazz tune with no lyrics, composed by the US pianist and composer George Wallington (born Giacinto Figlia, 1923/1924-1993). It is one of his best-known compositions from his years as a sideman, from 1943 to 1948. Miles Davis and His Orchestra, the Birth of the Cool nonet, first recorded it on January 21, 1949, in a session that also produced Jeru, Move and Budo. The track was issued on 78 rpm singles in 1949 and on the Capitol album Birth of the Cool in 1957. The melody is associated with the cool jazz of that session. Wallington's own trio recorded it later, and recordings by Woody Herman's band and Miles Davis helped make the tune known. Later standard versions were made by Kai Winding, Gerry Mulligan, Bill Charlap and Gary Burton.
