"Can't We Be Friends?" is a 1929 jazz standard and Broadway show tune. Kay Swift wrote the music and Paul James wrote the lyrics, a name under which James Warburg wrote lyrics. Libby Holman introduced the song on Broadway in the revue The Little Show (1929). Her own recording of it on a 78 rpm disc for Brunswick appeared that same year, and Red Nichols and His Five Pennies and Bing Crosby also recorded it in 1929. Al Bowlly recorded it with Ray Noble in 1931, followed by Benny Goodman in 1937, Bob Crosby's Bob Cats in 1938 and John Kirby in 1941. Later recordings by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra also appear among its versions. The song has been used in films, and its title should not be confused with that of "Why Can't We Be Friends?", a different song.
