“Violets for Your Furs” is a jazz standard with music by Matt Dennis and lyrics by Tom Adair, both American. The song was first recorded in September 1941 by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, with a vocal refrain by Frank Sinatra. Victor released it as a single on 14 November 1941, with “Somebody Loves Me” on the reverse side. Dennis recorded his own version in 1954, and Sinatra later recorded it again on Songs for Young Lovers (1954). Beverly Kenney also sang it. Later recordings include those by John Coltrane (1957), Billie Holiday on Lady in Satin (1958), Chet Baker, Nat Adderley (1960), the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1964) and Barry Manilow (2007). The lyrics are in English and form part of the song’s standard repertoire for vocalists and instrumentalists alike.
