"A Smooth One" (also catalogued as "A Smo-o-o-oth One") is an instrumental jazz piece by Benny Goodman, who is its only credited writer. The piece has no lyrics. Benny Goodman and His Sextet recorded it on 13 March 1941, and Victor issued the recording as a 78 rpm single on 9 May 1941, backed by "Good Enough To Keep". The original recording is a small-group performance, and the song is classified as swing-era jazz.
Later recordings include versions by Buddy Rich, Kenny Burrell, Jack McDuff, Oscar Pettiford, Herb Ellis and Freddie Green, Ellis Larkins, Junior Mance and Dave Pell. The song has also been recorded in vocal treatments, including one by Mel Tormé with the Mel-Tones and another by Barbara Jay. Together these versions show the tune taken up by players and singers well beyond its original sextet.
