"Fly Like an Eagle" was written by Steve Miller, with Steve McCarty also credited as a writer by some sources, and recorded by the Steve Miller Band, an American rock band. It was released as a single in 1976 and is the title track of the album Steve Miller Band, also released that year. The recording was made at CBS (Columbia) Studio in San Francisco and produced by Miller, who sings lead and plays guitar and ARP Odyssey, with Lonnie Turner on bass, Gary Mallaber on drums and Joachim Young on Hammond B3. The album version runs 4:42 and the single edit 3:00. In concert the song is often played with "Space Intro" and segued into "Wild Mountain Honey". The band had first played an earlier, bluesier version in 1973. Billboard described the single as "uncharacteristically thoughtful, but rivetingly attention grabbing", and it reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in March 1977, held off the top by Barbra Streisand's "Evergreen", and also reached No. 2 in Canada. It was certified platinum in the United States for sales of over one million copies. Seal's 1996 cover, from the Space Jam soundtrack, sold over 300,000 units.
