Parisian Thoroughfare is an instrumental jazz standard written by the American pianist Bud Powell in 1951. It is a contrafact, a new melody set over the harmonic structure of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". Powell first recorded the piece in February 1951 for Clef Records, and the performance was released in 1953 on the album Bud Powell's Moods. The first recording under the final title was made on 1 May 1951 at WOR Studios in New York, with Powell, Curley Russell and Max Roach, for Blue Note. Powell recorded it again in France in 1963. Later versions include Clifford Brown and Max Roach's recording on their 1954 album, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, Jaki Byard's 1968 version, a performance by Jacky Terrasson, and Ricardo Ray's 1965 recording, which adds a mambo break.
