The Folks Who Live on the Hill is a popular song with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was written in 1937 for the film High, Wide and Handsome, where Irene Dunne introduced it. That year Bing Crosby recorded it for Decca, and Guy Lombardo enjoyed chart success with it.
The song became particularly associated with Peggy Lee, whose 1957 version on the album The Man I Love was arranged by Nelson Riddle and conducted by Frank Sinatra. Later recordings include those by Johnny Mathis (1960), Bill Henderson with the Oscar Peterson Trio (1963), Johnny Hartman (1972), Tony Bennett (1990), Nina Simone (1993), Diana Krall (1995) and Bette Midler (2005). It is a ballad and a jazz standard.
