"The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" was written and composed by Rudy Clark, a staff writer for TM Music, the company headed by Bobby Darin. Merry Clayton released the first version as a single in 1963, produced by Jack Nitzsche, with Hal Blaine on drums and the Blossoms on backing vocals, but it did not chart. The Shirelles turned the song down, and Calvin Carter of Vee-Jay found it in New York. Betty Everett recorded it in Chicago on 26 November 1963. Her version, released in January 1964 with the Opals on backing vocals, reached No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 1964 and No. 1 on the Cash Box R&B chart. It also reached No. 21 in Australia and No. 2 in New Zealand, and it was reissued in 1968. Ramona King issued a version in February 1964. Linda Lewis's disco version was a UK top-ten hit in 1975. Cher's 1990 cover, recorded for the film Mermaids, was a UK No. 1 and her first solo No. 1, and it peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. Dave Marsh calls Everett's version one of the finest girl-group hits.
