"Who Says" is a 2009 single by American singer-songwriter John Mayer, who wrote both the music and the lyrics. It was the first single from his fourth studio album, Battle Studies, released in November 2009 on Columbia, Aware Records and Sony. Mayer produced the track with Steve Jordan. The original recording, released in October 2009, is an acoustic pop song with a stripped-down, folk-inspired arrangement, running 2:59. Mayer sings and plays guitars, Steve Jordan plays drums, Pino Palladino plays bass, and Ian McLagan adds pump organ and celeste. Billboard praised the folk-inspired arrangement, while critical reception was mixed: most praised the musicality, and some were skeptical of the explicit drug reference. The single debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2009 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Triple A chart. It also made the top ten in Denmark and reached No. 2 in Norway, and it was certified Platinum in the United States. Several artists have covered it. The music video intercuts Mayer clubbing and dining out at night with scenes of him alone in his apartment, cleaning and playing guitar. Entertainment Weekly gave the video a B.
