It was first heard in the 1959 film Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro), directed by Marcel Camus, and was released in France on 12 June 1959 as part of the soundtrack. The soundtrack album, credited to Jobim and Bonfá, was released in 1960. The original recording is an instrumental performance by Luiz Bonfá, and the song is in the key of C. It became a jazz standard, recorded by many artists, among them Vince Guaraldi, Paul Desmond, Cal Tjader, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett.
