"Interplay" is an instrumental composition by Bill Evans, the only credited writer. It is in the key of F and appears as the fifth of seven tracks on the album of the same name, where it runs 8:14. The Bill Evans Quintet recorded it on 16 and 17 July 1962 at Sound Makers Studio in New York City, with Evans on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Orrin Keepnews produced the session. Riverside released the album as RLP-445. AllMusic's Scott Yanow called the music excellent, the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide gave the album five stars, and the Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it three. The 1982 Milestone reissue The Interplay Sessions added tracks recorded for Riverside in August 1962 with Zoot Sims and Ron Carter. The album is in the post bop style.
