"Long Train Runnin'" is a 1973 song by the American rock band the Doobie Brothers, written by band member Tom Johnston, who sings lead and plays the rhythmic guitar and a harmonica solo. It appeared on the band's third album, The Captain and Me, and was released as a single by Warner Bros. on 28 March 1973, reaching No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also No. 8 in Canada. The track was recorded in 1972 and 1973 at Warner Bros. Studios in North Hollywood, produced by Ted Templeman, and runs 3:27. It grew out of an untitled, mostly ad-libbed onstage jam under the working titles "Rosie Pig Moseley" and "Osborn". Johnston initially considered it "a bar song without a lot of merit" until Templeman persuaded him to write words. Often classed as country rock, southern rock, boogie rock and pop rock, it was described by Billboard as a "good-timey, good-harmony AM cooker". Later versions include covers by Traks (1982) and Bananarama (1991), and a 1993 remix that reached No. 7 in the UK.
