"In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town" is a popular song published in 1932, with music by Little Jack Little and Ira Schuster, who also wrote under the alias John Siras, and lyrics by Joe Young. It was introduced by Ted Lewis and His Band in the 1932 film The Crooner. Lewis's recording was released as a single in 1932, made on 15 March that year, and reached number one for 10 weeks.
Johnny Long and His Orchestra had a million seller with the song in 1946, and Somethin' Smith and the Redheads brought it back into the charts in 1956, where it reached number 27. Jerry Lee Lewis recorded a version in 1958 or 1959. Among many other recordings are versions by Bobby Vinton, Fats Domino, Doris Day, Big Bill Broonzy and Vera Lynn. The song is a dance-band and jazz standard with English lyrics, in the Dixieland and dance-band tradition.
