Frank Loesser wrote both the music and the lyrics of "Brotherhood of Man" for the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The show, with a book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert based on Shepherd Mead's 1952 book, opened at the 46th Street Theatre on October 14, 1961. It won seven Tony Awards and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The song is sung near the end of the show, in the boardroom scene. The 1961 Original Broadway Cast recording featured Robert Morse, Ruth Kobart and Sammy Smith, and the 1967 film recreated the stage roles of Morse, Smith and Kobart. Early recordings were made by Jaye P. Morgan in 1961, Al Hirt in 1962 and The Four Seasons in 1964 and 1965. Jazz and swing versions include those by Oscar Peterson with Clark Terry (1964) and Woody Herman (1981). The sheet music is in E-flat.
