In Love In Vain is a popular song with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Leo Robin. It was written for the 1946 Technicolor film Centennial Summer, starring Jeanne Crain and Cornel Wilde. Margaret Whiting was the first to record it, with the Carl Kress orchestra on 10 December 1945. The recording was released in February 1946 on the Capitol single "All Through the Day".
The song, with lyrics in English, was written as a standard and has been taken up by many singers since. Among those who have recorded it are Shirley Horn, George Byron, Bobby Darin, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan and Eydie Gorme, whose versions form part of its later performing history.
