"Your Song" is a ballad with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin, written in 1970. John recorded it at Trident Studios in London in January 1970, where it opens his self-titled album, produced by Gus Dudgeon. The arrangement, in E-flat major, centres on John's piano, influenced by Leon Russell, with acoustic guitar and Paul Buckmaster's strings. Three Dog Night released a version in March 1970 on It Ain't Easy, after John, their opening act, let them record it. The US single, issued in October 1970, was first the B-side of "Take Me to the Pilot" but became the A-side. It was John's first international Top 10 single, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 in the UK. NME called it "glowing and strangely haunting", and AllMusic described it as a near-perfect song. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Rod Stewart, Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding have covered it, and it is sung in Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Ewan McGregor and Alessandro Safina and in Rocketman (2019) by Taron Egerton.
