A Time for Love is a romantic jazz ballad written by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. It was written for the 1966 film An American Dream and introduced there with Janet Leigh singing (dubbed by Jackie Ward) in the film, which premiered on August 31, 1966. The song describes tender images that invite love, such as summer skies and hummingbirds, and became a widely performed jazz standard. Notable versions include Tony Bennett’s 1966 album A Time for Love, Bill Evans’ instrumental take, and Shirley Horn’s rendition on Here’s to Life (1991) - it has been recorded by many artists including Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, and Milt Jackson. Although it did not chart as a single, Mandel and Webster were Oscar nominees for Best Song for An American Dream, and the tune won the Golden Laurel Award in 1967.
