Emily is a jazz ballad composed by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was written as the title song for the 1964 film The Americanization of Emily; the vocal version isn’t sung in the movie, but it appears on the film’s soundtrack and was published in 1965. The tune has since become a standard, recorded by many artists and especially associated with Bill Evans, who helped popularize it in jazz. Notable vocal versions include Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Tony Bennett, and Barbra Streisand, and it has also been performed as an instrumental by numerous jazz players. The song is commonly performed as a slow ballad in a 3/4 waltz feel.
