Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye is a jazz standard written by Cole Porter and published in 1944. It was introduced by Nan Wynn and Jere McMahon in Billy Rose’s musical revue Seven Lively Arts, and is part of the Great American Songbook. The lyrics celebrate happiness in the beloved’s company and sorrow when they part, while the music shifts from major to minor to mirror the mood. A popular early recording was by the Benny Goodman Quintet in 1945, and the tune has since been covered by many artists including Teddy Wilson with Maxine Sullivan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Betty Carter, John Coltrane, Diana Krall, Annie Lennox, Carly Simon and Lady Gaga, among others. It originates from a stage revue rather than a single album, but has been included on numerous albums such as Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book.
