Señor Blues is a jazz composition by Horace Silver, recorded by the Horace Silver Quintet on November 10, 1956 in Hackensack, New Jersey. It appears on the Blue Note album 6 Pieces of Silver and quickly became a jazz standard. The original instrumental features Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The tune is a 12/8 Latin-flavored piece with a dark, exotic mood, and its opening chords Eb minor and B7 touch on Ellingtonian harmonies. Silver later added lyrics, first recorded by his band with Bill Henderson in 1958, and a vocal version by Mark Murphy appeared on his 1962 Riverside album That's How I Love the Blues! It has influenced many players and is associated with hard bop and Latin jazz rhythms. The song also lent its title to a Taj Mahal album that features the track.
