My Ship is a song written in 1941 by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, for the Broadway musical Lady in the Dark. Gertrude Lawrence created the role of Liza Elliott, the editor of a fashion magazine, and the song appears in a sequence in which Elliott, in psychoanalysis, recalls a turn-of-the-century song she knew in childhood. The music is marked Andante espressivo. Ira Gershwin described the orchestration as sweet and simple at times and mysterious and menacing at others. The song was not included in the 1944 Hollywood film, which Gershwin found inexplicable, since the film still referred to it. Notable recordings include those by Judy Garland (1953), Sarah Vaughan (1956 and 1957), Miles Davis with Gil Evans (1957), Doris Day (1961), Johnny Hartman (1964) and Ella Fitzgerald with Joe Pass (1986). Herbie Hancock's version, recorded in 2002 at Massey Hall, won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
