"Juju" is an instrumental jazz composition by Wayne Shorter, who is its sole writer. Shorter first recorded it on 3 August 1964 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and it was released in July 1965 on the Blue Note album JuJu (BLP 4182), produced by Alfred Lion. Shorter plays tenor saxophone, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. The piece opens side one of the album, runs 8:30 and is followed by "Deluge", "House of Jade", "Mahjong", "Yes or No" and "Twelve More Bars to Go". It is classed as hard bop, modal jazz and post-bop. The album received favourable reviews from DownBeat, The Penguin Guide to Jazz and the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide. An alternate take appeared on the 1996 remastered CD. Later recordings include versions by Larry Coryell and Steve Khan, Poncho Sanchez, Anthony Braxton and Gretchen Parlato.
