"Ugly Beauty" is a jazz composition by Thelonious Monk, who is credited as its sole writer and was also its original performer. It is built in 32-bar AABA form. Monk's quartet recorded it in the studio on 14 December 1967 for the album Underground, released by Columbia in 1968. An earlier performance survives from a taped television broadcast on 14 November 1967. Drummer Ben Riley suggested playing the tune as a waltz, which makes it Monk's only waltz. Mike Ferro later wrote lyrics, and Carmen McRae recorded the lyric version in 1988 under the title "Still We Dream", a change made for copyright reasons. The tune is now a standard, recorded by artists including Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Flanagan, Kevin Hays and Stefano Bollani.
