"Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" is a blues song with English lyrics, credited to Charles Warfield and Clarence Williams, and dated to 1919 by some sources. Its authorship is disputed, and Warfield claims to be the sole composer. It became a jazz standard. The first recording was made by Eva Taylor, accompanied on piano by Clarence Williams, on 25 November 1922. It was released in February 1923 on the Okeh single "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate".
Bessie Smith's 1923 recording was the song's first hit, staying on the charts for four weeks and peaking at No. 6. Later recordings were made by Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra (1957), Louis Prima with Keely Smith (1957), Ricky Nelson, Della Reese and Brook Benton.
