"Libertango" is an instrumental tango nuevo piece composed by Astor Piazzolla, who is its sole credited writer. The original version has no lyrics; Horacio Ferrer added Spanish lyrics in 1990. The title merges "Libertad" and "tango" and symbolises Piazzolla's break from classical tango. The track was recorded in Milan in May 1974 and released on the album Libertango on the Carosello label. It runs 2:49. Piazzolla plays bandoneon and also acts as arranger and conductor. The lineup includes Pino Presti, who created the bassline, Tullio De Piscopo on drums, and strings. The style blends tango, jazz and Latin elements, and the piece is one of Piazzolla's landmark works.
Notable versions include those by Yo-Yo Ma (1997), Al Di Meola (2000), Rodrigo y Gabriela (2004) and Roman Miroshnichenko (2013). Grace Jones's "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)" uses the same music. The piece has also been used on screen, including in Jacques Rivette's Le Pont du Nord (1981) and Roman Polanski's Frantic (1988).
