“Cucurrucucú paloma” is a Mexican huapango-style song composed by Tomás Méndez in 1954. Its title imitates the call of the mourning dove, a sound echoed in the refrain, while the lyrics portray the anguish of lovesickness. The song entered Mexican cinema in Escuela de vagabundos, released in 1955, where it was sung by Pedro Infante, and later lent its title to the 1965 film Cucurrucucú Paloma, featuring Lola Beltrán.
The piece is commonly associated with mariachi-influenced performance, but Caetano Veloso gave it a markedly different art-song treatment for Pedro Almodóvar’s 2002 film Talk to Her. Its melody and recurring dove-call refrain invite expressive phrasing and flexible rubato, whether played with a folk, mariachi, or more intimate vocal approach. The song has also been recorded by artists including Harry Belafonte, Luis Miguel, Rocío Dúrcal, Perry Como, Joan Baez, Nana Mouskouri, Julio Iglesias, Lila Downs, and Natalia Lafourcade.
