"Panique" is a French gypsy jazz tune in the key of D, composed by Pierre "Baro" Ferret (1908–1978), a guitarist of the Ferret family and a figure of the French gypsy jazz scene. Ferret is credited as the sole composer, and no lyricist is named. The tune is instrumental, so it has no lyrics and the melody alone carries it. The key of D is the detail most useful to a player approaching the tune.
The original recording was made by Baro Ferret and the Ferret brothers, appearing as Les Frères Ferret or Pierre Ferret et son ensemble, in the 1930s to 1950s; the exact date of the first recording has not been confirmed. It was later collected on the 2009 compilation "Les Gitans de Paris 1938-1956", which credits the tune to Baro Ferret. The compilation's title places its recordings between 1938 and 1956. A later recording by Marcel Azzola and Richard Galliano dates from 1990.
