"The Night We Called It a Day" is a popular song and jazz standard with music by Matt Dennis and lyrics by Tom Adair, published in 1941. It is a sung ballad with English lyrics. The original recording is by Johnny Long and His Orchestra, with a vocal chorus by Bob Houston, made on 15 December 1941 and released as a single in January 1942. Frank Sinatra made his first solo recording of the song for Bluebird in February 1942, with Axel Stordahl and His Orchestra, and Billboard praised it as a sparkling example of song. Sinatra recorded it again for Columbia in 1947 and for Capitol in 1957. Later versions by June Christy, Doris Day, The Four Freshmen, Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Chet Baker and Mark Murphy followed, along with an instrumental version by Milt Jackson and John Coltrane and recordings by Diana Krall in 2001 and Bob Dylan, who sang it on the Letterman show in May 2015 and on the album Shadows in the Night.
