"Água de Beber" is a bossa nova and jazz standard with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics. The song was published in 1961, and its first recording, by Vinícius de Moraes with a conjunto and chorus, was issued as a single that January. Jobim's own version appeared on the album The Composer of Desafinado, Plays (Verve, 1963). The sheet music is in the key of D.
According to accounts of its origin, in 1959, while Brasília was under construction, President Juscelino Kubitschek invited Jobim and Vinícius to stay at the Catetinho and compose a symphony for the city's inauguration. Near the palace they heard water and asked a watchman, who told them that this was where drinking water could be found. The song is said to be the first composed in Brasília. Later recordings include versions by Astrud Gilberto (1965), Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 (1966) and Frank Sinatra with Jobim (1969). A short film of the same name, about its creation, was released in 2022.
