One Note Samba (Portuguese title "Samba de uma Nota Só") is a bossa nova and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim, with Portuguese lyrics by Newton Mendonça and English lyrics by Jon Hendricks. João Gilberto made the first recording in 1960, released on his album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor. The title refers to the main melody, which opens with a long series of one repeated tone, typically D in the key of G, over a descending bossa nova chord progression: eight bars of D, four of G, then four of D, before a more conventional scalar melody follows.
The song reached a wide audience through the Jazz Samba LP by Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts, which won a Grammy and reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 1963. Other notable recordings include those by Sylvia Telles (1960), Dizzy Gillespie (1962), Frank Sinatra with Jobim (1971), Ella Fitzgerald (1981) and Stacey Kent (2013). The song was also featured in the 1963 Naked City episode "A Man Without a Skin".
