Del Sasser is a jazz instrumental with no lyrics, composed by the bassist Sam Jones (1924-1981), who wrote it while working with Cannonball Adderley. Jones is the sole credited writer. The tune is one of the jazz standards he wrote during that period, alongside "Unit 7". The original recording was made by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1960 and appears as track A4 on the album Them Dirty Blues, released on Riverside. The album was recorded on 1 February and 29 March 1960 in New York and Chicago, produced by Orrin Keepnews, and is classed in the hard bop style. The tune was later recorded by many artists, including Emily Remler on Transitions, Joe Zawinul with Money in the Pocket, and the album Freedom at Midnight. Jones himself revisited it on his album Visitation, where he played it as a breezy bop vehicle, and Ray Brown made an arrangement of it.
