"On the Sunny Side of the Street" is a song with music by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, published in 1930. It was introduced in the Broadway revue Lew Leslie's International Revue, starring Harry Richman and Gertrude Lawrence. Some authors say Fats Waller contributed to the music but sold the rights. Ted Lewis made the first recording in 1930, and Harry Richman had an early hit with it. Layton & Johnstone also recorded it for Columbia that year.
The song became a jazz standard, recorded by Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Dave Brubeck, Earl Hines, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and many others. The most popular version was the 1945 arrangement by Tommy Dorsey and the Sentimentalists, which was a chart hit. It has also been heard in film and television, including JFK (1991), Cheers and Frasier.
