"Glad to Be Unhappy" is a song with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. It was introduced in their 1936 Broadway musical On Your Toes, sung by Doris Carson and David Morris. It was not a hit at the time, but it later became a popular torch song and jazz standard. Other stage productions included a 1937 London production with Gina Malo and Eddie Pola, and a 1954 Broadway revival with Kay Coulter and Joshua Shelley.
Early recordings include versions by Bea Wain (1939) and Lee Wiley (1940). Later notable recordings came from Lena Horne (1946), Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra (both 1955), Billie Holiday (1958), Chris Connor (1959), Eric Dolphy (1960), Paul Desmond (1965) and Barbra Streisand (1973). The Mamas & the Papas recorded it for ABC's Stage 67 program "Rodgers and Hart Today", and their single reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1967.
