"I'll Never Smile Again" is a 1939 ballad written by Ruth Lowe, who wrote both the music and the lyrics. It was published on 27 November 1939 by Sun Music Co., New York. An English-language jazz and pop ballad, it is considered one of the great standards of the period. The earliest recording was made by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, with a vocal by Ray Eberle, in February 1940 and released that April on RCA Bluebird.
The best-known version was recorded by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, with vocals by Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers, in May 1940 for Victor. It was number one on Billboard's first national best-seller list in July 1940 and remained there for 12 weeks, and it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1982. Percy Faith is also credited with an early performance on Canadian radio. Other notable versions include those by the Ink Spots (1940), Sarah Vaughan (1956), Billie Holiday (1959), The Platters (1959), Frank Sinatra (1959) and Michael Bublé (2002).
