Firm Roots is an instrumental jazz composition by Cedar Walton, who was its sole writer. It is in the key of E-flat. Walton recorded it in April 1974, and it was first released on his album Firm Roots, issued by Muse in 1976. In 1975, Clifford Jordan and The Magic Triangle recorded the tune for their album of the same title. The Walton album is listed under the styles hard bop and jazz-funk. Later recordings include versions by the Horace Parlan Trio (1979), Gary Burton and the Berklee Allstars (1986), Roy Hargrove (1995), and Eric Alexander with Vincent Herring (2005). The tune is not a standard but remains the work of one composer and is best known through the original Walton recording and the Jordan version that followed it.
