"Adam's Apple" is an instrumental composition by Wayne Shorter, who wrote it alone and gave it no lyrics. It is the title track of Adam's Apple, the tenth album Shorter led for Blue Note, produced by Alfred Lion and released in 1967. The track was recorded in February 1966 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, with Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Joe Chambers on drums. Written in a post-bop idiom with hard bop roots, it runs about six minutes and forty-nine seconds and opens the album's first side. Jazz Journal called the record a tour de force for Shorter as soloist, AllMusic rated it five stars and DownBeat gave it 4.5 out of 5. Later versions include recordings by Lorenzo Tucci, Conrad Herwig and Walter Smith III.
