Desafinado is a bossa nova song and jazz standard with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Newton Mendonça. João Gilberto recorded it on 10 November 1958 at the Odeon studios in Rio de Janeiro. EMI-Odeon released it as a single in February 1959, backed by Hô-bá-lá-lá, and it also appeared on his debut album Chega de Saudade. The song is regarded as one of the seminal works of bossa nova and one that best defines the genre. It is written in 4/4 in F major, marked Medium Bossa at about 145 bpm. The 1962 recording by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, from the album Jazz Samba, became a major hit and won the 1963 Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Soloist or Small Group. Chega de Saudade was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, and Brazilian Rolling Stone ranked the song 14th among the greatest Brazilian songs. Many artists have recorded it, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nara Leão, Herb Alpert and Antônio Carlos Jobim himself. English versions include Jon Hendricks's "Slightly Out of Tune" and Gene Lees's "Off Key".
