“Heal the World” was written and composed by Michael Jackson, who recorded it for his eighth studio album, Dangerous, released in 1991. Produced by Jackson and Bruce Swedien, it was issued by Epic Records as the album’s sixth single on November 9, 1992. Its antiwar message and appeal for humanitarian improvement became closely associated with the charitable Heal the World Foundation and the Dangerous World Tour.
Musically, it is a slow, sing-along pop ballad at about 80 beats per minute. The song begins in A major, then modulates to B major when the choir enters, with the final chorus rising again to C-sharp major. The arrangement centers on Jackson’s lead vocal before expanding into a large choral climax, giving the closing sections an anthemic character. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jackson also performed it during the Super Bowl XXVII halftime show with a 35,000-person flash-card display.
