“Sweet Child o’ Mine” was written by Guns N’ Roses members Steven Adler, Duff McKagan, Axl Rose, Slash and Izzy Stradlin. It developed from a Sunset Strip house jam: Slash began with the distinctive “circus” guitar figure, Stradlin added chords, McKagan a bassline and Adler the beat, while Rose wrote lyrics inspired by his girlfriend Erin Everly. The band later added the bridge and guitar solo, and producer Spencer Proffer suggested the closing breakdown built around Rose’s repeated “Where do we go now?” line.
Guns N’ Roses recorded the song for their 1987 debut album Appetite for Destruction. Released as a US single in June 1988, it became the band’s only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. A medium-tempo hard-rock performance, it is defined by Slash’s arpeggiated opening riff, melodic bass movement, layered guitars, dynamic breakdown and extended lead-guitar passage. The original album version runs 5:56; a shorter radio edit removed much of the solo. The video, directed by Nigel Dick, helped bring the song mainstream success.
